London-Based Footballer George Kamurasi Chosen as Next King of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom

A London-based footballer, George Kamurasi, has been selected to become the next king of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom, putting the 36-year-old goalkeeper in an unexpected position between his football career in England and royal responsibilities in Africa.

Kamurasi currently plays for non-league club SE Dons in southeast London, competing in the Southern Counties East League Premier Division. He also serves as the team’s captain and is known among his teammates for his strong leadership and outspoken personality.

His selection follows the death of his cousin, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who died at the age of 34 while receiving treatment for cancer. King Oyo had been on the Tooro throne since 1995, having become king when he was only three years old.

The decision to name Kamurasi as the next ruler was reportedly made by a committee responsible for selecting the successor. His royal background is well established, with his grandfather, King George Rukidi III, having played a prominent role in Uganda’s history, including welcoming the late Queen Elizabeth II during her visit to the country in 1954.

However, Kamurasi now faces a major personal decision. Although he has been chosen to take on the royal position, reports indicate that he is reluctant to leave his life in London, where he lives with his wife and son and has built a career in football.

His selection has also generated different reactions in Uganda. While some people have welcomed his confident and direct personality, others have raised questions about whether someone who has spent much of his life in the United Kingdom can effectively represent the traditions and interests of the Tooro people.

Adding another twist to the situation, Kamurasi could potentially miss the funeral of the late King Oyo because of a football fixture involving SE Dons. With a royal position awaiting him in Uganda and his football life firmly established in London, Kamurasi now faces a life-changing choice between the pitch and the throne.
