Sway DaSafo Dies at 44 as Tributes Pour In for British-Ghanaian Rapper

British-Ghanaian rapper and producer Sway DaSafo has died at the age of 44, prompting an outpouring of tributes from friends, fans and personalities within the music industry.

News of the rapper’s passing emerged on Thursday, September 17, 2026, after his close friend Kream shared an emotional tribute on Instagram. Kream described Sway as a close friend and a pioneer who played an important role in the growth of UK rap.

According to Kream’s tribute, the two had remained in touch in recent months and supported each other while dealing with personal challenges. He also revealed that Sway is survived by four children — two sons and two daughters.

Born Derek Andrew Safo in North London to Ghanaian parents, Sway rose to prominence during the 2000s and became one of the notable names in British hip-hop. His music combined elements of UK hip-hop, grime and other sounds, helping him establish a distinctive identity in the British music scene.

Sway gained recognition through songs such as “On My Own” and “Little Derek” before releasing his debut album, This Is My Demo, in 2006. The project went on to receive a Mercury Prize nomination, further cementing his reputation as an influential figure in UK music.

His connection to Ghana was also reflected in his music and collaborations. He released “Black Stars” in 2008 and worked with Ghanaian artistes, including Sarkodie, strengthening the connection between his British career and his Ghanaian heritage.

Sway made history at the 2005 MOBO Awards when he became the first unsigned artist to win the Best Hip Hop Act award. His career later included collaborations with international artistes and work behind the scenes through his production company, Dcypha Productions.
