2026 U-20 WWC: England Coach Reacts to Falconets Defeat

England U-20 women’s coach Lydia Bedford has admitted that her side was disappointed to bow out of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after suffering a 3-0 defeat to Nigeria.

The Young Lionesses’ campaign came to an end in the Round of 16 after they were comfortably beaten by the Falconets in Bielsko-Biala.

Nigeria wasted little time making their presence felt, with midfielder Tosin Rafiu putting the Falconets ahead early in the encounter.

England had opportunities to respond, but Nigeria’s goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma produced an important save to deny forward Princess Ademiluyi and preserve her team’s advantage.

Uzoma was again called into action when England were awarded a penalty. She brilliantly kept out Rachel Maltby’s effort, with the ball hitting the crossbar before being cleared to safety.

The Falconets continued to cause problems for England with their aggressive approach and direct style of play, eventually securing a convincing 3-0 victory to book their place in the quarter-finals.

Reflecting on the result, Bedford praised her players for their overall tournament performance but admitted that the defeat was difficult to accept.

“It has been a fantastic tournament and we have really enjoyed being part of it, but we are disappointed to be leaving at this stage,” Bedford said, according to FIFA.com.

The England coach also acknowledged that her team struggled to deal with Nigeria’s physical approach and direct attacking play.

“Nigeria’s forwards were very effective with their direct and physical approach, and that was something we found difficult to match at certain moments,” she added.

The result brings England’s campaign to an end, while Nigeria’s Falconets advance to the next stage of the competition with momentum after their impressive victory.
