Speaking to reporters ahead of Real Madrid’s highly anticipated UEFA Champions League opener against Inter Milan, the French national team captain opened up about his pursuit of the Ballon d'Or, boldly stating that "it’s a good year to win it".

After years of pacing his expectations and finishing as high as third in the rankings back in 2023, the 27 year old forward is fully leaning into the narrative surrounding his candidacy. His newfound confidence is heavily anchored by an extraordinary summer on the international stage. At the 2026 World Cup in North America, Mbappé put on a masterclass, carrying France to a fourth  place finish and securing the Golden Boot with a staggering 10 goals. That spectacular run catapulted his career World Cup tally to 22 goals, officially making him the all-time top scorer in the tournament's history.

"Of course, I made a lot of history this summer in the most important competition in sports," Mbappé remarked during his press conference. "I have the feeling that it's a good year for that, but there's still a long time to go and people are free to vote for whoever they think is the best player in the world."

While his individual exploits are undeniable, including netting 42 goals in 44 appearances during his debut season for Real Madrid, his club campaign ended without a major trophy, a factor that traditionally weighs heavily on voters.
