Entertainment has changed Nigeria’s global image despite poor leadership- Davido

Nigerian Afrobeats star Davido says the country’s entertainment industry has helped improve its image abroad, despite what he describes as poor leadership.

Davido, whose real name is David Adeleke, is one of Africa’s biggest music stars. Known for global hits like Fall and If, he has won several awards and sold out shows around the world.

Speaking in an interview with Apple Music’s Ebro Darden, the award-winning singer said: “We [Nigerians] don’t have the best leaders. We have the worst governments. But the music and entertainment industry in general has impacted our country’s image abroad positively.”

He praised how Nigerian culture is now attracting international attention.

“Last December, there were more Americans than Nigerians in Lagos. I was like, what are you all doing here?” he said.

“Back in the day, we used to be excited to go to America, but now they are coming here. It’s not just music, it’s the culture as a whole. If you go to Paris Fashion Week, about 80% of the models are Africans, same with the creative directors. It’s impressive.”
