90s heartthrob-turned 2010's environmental activist Leonardo DiCaprio is taking on the best cartoon TV show to come out of the 1990s to bring it to the big screen.

Movieweb reports that DiCaprio is behind the new Captain Planet movie, teaming up with Paramount Pictures to bring the green, mullet-wearing environmentally conscious superhero to the big screen.

Captain Planet was about defeating the bad guys to keep the planet clean, with the help of his planeteers, five teenagers from across the globe.

At the end of each episode there was a message to show children what they could do in their corner of the world.

DiCaprio's own Appian Way Productions will be producing the film, it has been reported.

The Hollywood Reporter says Paramount is targeting Jono Matt and Scream Queens star Glen Powell to write the screenplay, and when a deal is finalized with the two screenwriters, Jennifer Davisson Killoran and DiCaprio will move forward with their deal to produce the film. The company signed a first look deal with the studio back in March alongside Glen Powell, according to MovieWeb.

While one can hope, there is no word whether DiCaprio will be in the movie or not.

Captain Planet and the Planeteers ran for two years, from 1990-1992, originally dreamed up by environmentalist and media mogul Ted Turner.

For those too young to remember - you missed out. Each episode followed the five teenagers - including Kwame, from Africa, who each had a magical ring that let them control the natural elements - earth, fire, wind, water and heart. They would stand together, point their rings to the sky and summon Captain Planet when times got tough. Together they would fight off a host of baddies set on destroying the planet.

Media reports that sources close to the project say that the film's story will takes place several years after the show ended, poor old Captain Planet will no longer the superhero he used to be, but instead a washed-up has been. Will he still have a green mullet? We will have to wait and see, but according to the sources, he now needs his team of kids more than they ever needed him.

Leonardo DiCaprio has made a name for himself for his work in speaking out on global warming. When he accepted his very first Oscar this year, he used it as an opportunity to speak out on climate change.

He also has a documentary out at the moment - Before the Flood - on climate change.

No release date or production start date has been announced for Captain Planet at this time.

In the meantime, 90s kids around the world will be digging out their old makeshift Captain Planet rings and thinking back on those memories of sitting in front of the old analogue TV after school for their daily lesson in keeping the planet alive, driven on by Captain Planet's moto: "The Power Is Yours!"
