Quincy Promes Arrested in Dubai, Extradition to Netherlands Expected
Dutch international footballer Quincy Promes has reportedly been arrested in Dubai today, Thursday, June 12, 2025, a crucial development that is expected to lead to his long-awaited extradition to the Netherlands. The arrest comes as Promes faces a combined 7.5-year prison sentence in his home country for serious criminal convictions.
Sources, including reports citing Promes's lawyer Cem Polat and international media outlets, confirm the arrest was carried out at his residence in Dubai. Promes has now been transferred to a detention center, awaiting the official extradition process.
This marks a significant turning point in the protracted legal saga surrounding the former Ajax and Sevilla winger. Promes was previously sentenced in absentia by Dutch courts:
- 1.5 years for aggravated assault: In June 2023, he was convicted for stabbing his cousin at a family party in 2020.
- 6 years for involvement in cocaine smuggling: In February 2024, he received a further sentence for his role in the trafficking of over a thousand kilograms of cocaine through the port of Antwerp.
Promes had been residing and playing in Russia for Spartak Moscow, a country with no extradition treaty with the Netherlands, effectively allowing him to evade his sentences. His presence in Dubai, however, has proven to be his undoing, as the United Arab Emirates has an extradition treaty with the Netherlands.
The Dutch Public Prosecution Service has actively pursued Promes's extradition, issuing international arrest warrants. While he was previously detained in Dubai in March 2024 following a traffic incident, he was later released under the condition that he would not leave the UAE, and has since been playing for Dubai United.
Today's arrest intensifies the likelihood that Promes will soon be brought before Dutch authorities to begin serving his considerable prison sentences. The news sends a strong message that even high-profile individuals cannot indefinitely escape justice.
