NIGERIANS PROTEST OVER POLICE BRUTALITY SARS
Over the weekend, thousands of Nigerians took to the streets to demand justice and protest against police brutality. The #ENDSARS protest has since gained a lot of popularity in the country and diaspora with some of Nigeria’s celebrities and international stars showing their support for the movement.
Nigerian music duo, P-square were seen leading the movement with other acts such as Falz the bad guy, Flavor, Patoranking, Tekno, Broda Shaggi , Kaycee and many others. The protesters took to the streets of Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt blocking major roads and highways demanding the disbandment of SARS.
After days of angry protests, the government announced that SARS would be disbanded and its officers would be deployed to other units. The police announced on Tuesday that a new unit, Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT) would replace the Special Anti- Robbery Squad (SARS). Within less than an hour after the press statement, protesters posted the news with the hash tag #ENDSWAT.
Authorities said a police officer and a civilian were killed during protests on Monday. The protestors are calling for a total reform across the country’s entire police system and the entire country as a whole
