‘Black Wednesday in Nollywood’: Nigerian Celebrities Mourn the Passing of Olu Jacobs

The Nigerian entertainment industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran actor Olu Jacobs, with celebrities from Nollywood and beyond taking to social media to honour the legendary performer.

Jacobs, one of the most respected figures in Nigerian theatre and film, reportedly died at the age of 84 on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, after battling dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB).

News of his passing sparked an outpouring of grief from actors, musicians, comedians, influencers and other prominent personalities who described him as an icon whose contribution to the Nigerian entertainment industry spanned several decades.

Actor Stanley Ontop described the day as a “black Wednesday in Nollywood.” Sharing a photograph of the late actor, he expressed his pain over the loss and recalled the impact Jacobs had on his childhood. He wrote, “Keep resting in the bosom of the Lord, legendary Olu Jacobs. You made my childhood memorable. I woke up this morning with tears in my eyes. Chai, chai, this one pain me. Black Wednesday in Nollywood.”

Veteran actor Richard Mofe-Damijo, popularly known as RMD, also paid an emotional tribute to Jacobs. He described him as a pioneer whose talent, professionalism and dedication helped shape Nigerian theatre and film. RMD further revealed that he personally regarded Jacobs as “Uncle Jay” and credited his generation with benefiting from the path the late actor helped create.

Actress Mercy Johnson remembered Jacobs for the memorable moments they shared on set. She described him as more than a veteran, calling him a legend whose guidance, personality and influence became an important part of her career. According to her, the laughter, lessons and experiences they shared would remain precious memories.

Funke Akindele also expressed her sadness over the actor’s death. She described Jacobs as a kind and supportive individual who consistently encouraged young talents. She extended her condolences to his wife, actress Joke Silva, their children, the Jacobs family and the wider Nigerian film community, while praying for comfort, good health and long life for those in the creative industry.

Yemi Solade paid tribute to Jacobs by describing him as the “Lion of Lufodo” and celebrating the enormous influence he had on the creative industry. He noted that the memories of Jacobs and the artistic excellence he displayed throughout his career would continue to live on.

Mr Latin, President of the Theatre Arts and Movie Practitioners Association of Nigeria, also mourned the veteran actor. He described Jacobs as a true legend, an icon and a master of his profession, adding that his contribution to Nigerian theatre and film would remain unforgettable.

Actor Muyiwa Ademola described Olu Jacobs as a name that had grown into an institution. He praised his powerful presence, distinctive voice and ability to inspire generations of actors and filmmakers. Ademola said Jacobs had not only entertained audiences but had also demonstrated the true possibilities of acting.

Other entertainers also shared tributes. Skit maker Mr Macaroni described Jacobs as a legend, icon and source of inspiration, while Broda Shaggi prayed for the late actor’s soul and expressed hope that his memory would remain in the hearts of those who knew him.

Empress Njamah used theatrical imagery to describe Jacobs’ passing, saying the veteran had taken his final bow from life’s stage. She mourned the loss of the celebrated thespian and prayed for strength for his family during the difficult period.

Desmond Elliot also shared an emotional message, saying Jacobs had gone home and thanking him for making Africa proud through his work. He prayed for God’s presence and comfort for the actor’s family and loved ones.

Several other notable personalities, including Madam Saje, Mo Abudu, Toyosi Adesanya, Mike Ezuruonye, Emeka Rollas, Susan Peters, Evan Okoro, Daniel Etim Effiong, Abey Lanre, Mr Jolof, Agatha Amata and Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, also joined the growing list of people mourning the late actor.

Pastor Femi Lazarus, Banky W, Dare Justified, Deyemi Okanlawon, Enioluwa and Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, were also among those who paid tribute to Olu Jacobs.

The numerous tributes reflect the enormous influence Jacobs had across generations of Nigerian entertainers. From theatre to television and film, his career helped establish a lasting legacy that continues to influence the country’s creative industry.
