Davido: Overseas Education Has Been In My Family For Generations

Afrobeats star Davido says studying abroad isn’t new to his family — it’s a tradition that started with his grandfather.

In a recent interview that’s gone viral on social media, the award-winning singer explained that his grandfather, a former senator, made sure his children were sent overseas for school, mostly to the United States. Davido added that his father also continued the tradition by attending university in Kentucky.

“My grandfather was a senator, and most of his children were sent to America for their education. My dad went to university in Kentucky,” he said. According to him, this practice is common in many wealthy African homes, and his family has kept it going for decades.

The singer also spoke about his multicultural roots. He revealed that his parents met in London. His mother is from Edo State, while his father is Yoruba with Igbo heritage from his grandmother. Davido further shared that his mother later moved to the U.S. to get her master’s degree, deepening the family’s connection to America.

Talking about his upbringing between Nigeria and the United States, Davido said the experience shaped how he sees the world. He believes the exposure helped him grow personally and also played a big role in building his international music career.

He credited that global upbringing for giving him the perspective that has helped him break through on the world stage.
