Ryan Gosling’s ‘Project Hail Mary’ Smashes Box Office Records
The "Gosling Renaissance" has officially reached deep space. Project Hail Mary, the highly anticipated sci-fi epic starring Ryan Gosling, has orbited into history with a massive $140.9 million (£122m) global opening.
The film now holds the title for the biggest debut of 2026 so far, comfortably zooming past Scream 7 and setting a new record for Amazon MGM Studios by overtaking the opening weekend of Creed III.
Based on the best-selling novel by Andy Weir (author of The Martian), the film casts Gosling as Ryland Grace, a molecular biologist-turned-science teacher who wakes up on a spaceship with no memory of how he got there, only to realize he is humanity's last hope for survival.
Directed by the visionary duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (The Lego Movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse), the $200 million production is being hailed as a "mind-stretching" spectacle that balances hard science with Gosling’s signature wit.
The "Weir" Factor: From Page to Screen
Much like Ridley Scott’s 2015 hit The Martian, Project Hail Mary relies on grounded, high-stakes problem-solving. Amazon MGM’s distribution chief, Kevin Wilson, noted that Weir’s novel provided a "powerful foundation" for what Lord and Miller turned into a "visually stunning, heart-gripping film."
Gosling, who also serves as a producer, emphasized the need for levity in such a high-budget survival story. Speaking to the BBC, he explained his desire to create an environment where humor and existential stakes could co-exist:
''That's part of the reason why I wanted to produce [this film]... I felt like I needed to create an environment where these things could co-exist.''
