The End of an Era: Cristiano Ronaldo Announces International Retirement at 41
At 41 years old, Cristiano Ronaldo has officially closed the book on his illustrious 23-year career with the Portugal national team.
The five-time Ballon d'Or winner made the announcement via a heartfelt video shared on his Instagram account, confirming that his international playing days are over.
''To the Portuguese people, the day has come for me to hand back the number seven shirt of our national team,'' Ronaldo said in the video message. ''A journey that began in August 2003 and changed my life forever has come to an end.''
A Record-Breaking Legacy
Ronaldo departs the international stage as one of the most decorated players in football history:
- Caps & Goals: A world-record 234 appearances and 146 goals for Portugal.
- Major Trophies: Led Portugal to glory at Euro 2016, an achievement he regards on par with the World Cup as well as multiple Nations League titles.
- Longevity: Scored for his country across 23 consecutive calendar years (2004–2026) and appeared in six World Cups and six European Championships.
A Turbulent Final Chapter
The retirement follows a recent falling out with Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus. After being left out of the starting lineup for a Nations League fixture last month, Ronaldo departed the team's training camp early, resulting in a 30-day suspension and a fine from the Portuguese Football Federation (PFF).
Though a reconciliation was initially rumored, Ronaldo chose to step away permanently.
The PFF has announced plans to organize a proper, fitting tribute to honor his historic service to the nation.
Ronaldo's retirement from international duty does not mean the end of his playing days entirely. He remains under contract with Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr through June 2027.
