Peter Okoye Tells Court He Received Over $800,000 in P-Square Royalties

Nigerian singer Peter Okoye has disclosed that he received more than $800,000 in royalties from the French music rights organisation SACEM for songs recorded by the former music duo P-Square.

Peter, popularly known as Mr P, made the disclosure while testifying virtually before the Federal High Court in Lagos during the ongoing case involving his elder brother, Jude Okoye.

During cross-examination by Jude’s lawyer, Clement Onwuewunor, SAN, Peter confirmed that the royalties were connected to P-Square’s music and maintained that the money belonged to him and his twin brother, Paul Okoye.

Peter also told the court that he did not give Jude any portion of the payments. He explained that the funds were meant for the artistes and said he did not inform Jude about the money.

The singer further disputed Jude’s claim to a share of the SACEM royalties. According to Peter, although Jude signed the SACEM agreement, it was done on behalf of “the team”, and he maintained that Jude was not a member of P-Square.

Peter also acknowledged that he had previously given Jude 25 per cent of his SACEM earnings but denied that Jude later demanded quarterly payments after the royalties were reconciled in 2022.

The court also heard questions about P-Square’s music catalogue and royalty records. Peter said he requested the records because some individuals were interested in acquiring the group’s music catalogue.

Jude Okoye and his company, Northside Music Limited, are facing a seven-count charge filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission involving alleged financial offences of N1.3 billion and $1 million. Jude has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Peter maintained that he and Paul wrote, composed and produced P-Square’s songs, while acknowledging that Jude played a role in directing some of the group’s music videos.

The Federal High Court has adjourned further hearing in the case to December 8 and 9, 2026.
